GUEST (Herbert Melville) Boer War Episodes. [Comprising:] Vicissitudes of a Transvaal Dorp [bound with:] With Lord Methuen and the First Division [and:] Incidents in the Western Transvaal. Combined Ed. of three works from the original sheets, 2nd, 4th & 1st Eds., [iii]+48+127+64pp., portrait frontis., 10 photo. plates. Klerksdorp, SA: Herman Guest. 1939  #62429
[HLMainPic] Herbert Melville Guest was a Printer & Publisher at Klerksdorp, Transvaal, Proprietor of "The Mining Record" & during the Boer War a member of the Klerksdorp Town Guard. He published these three personal records between 1901-1902 (one or possibly more edition each of the first & third parts, four editions of the second part, but all doubtless in small numbers, issued in printed wraps. not present in this version). His son issued this combined edition, from the "few copies now available" of the original sheets in 1939. He states that "The value of the volume lies in the fact that it was written & produced when Klerksdorp was practically in a state of siege. The inhabitants were unable to proceed a mile in any direction from the market square, & the one railway line, although closely guarded, was frequently disturbed by the Boers." The first part, derived from diaries kept by residents, &c., details the first British occupation, & then the Boer occupation, together with a roll (& obituaries of those who fell in action) of the Town Guard. The second part gives an account of Methuen's First Division (including reproductions of official despatches) during the actions of Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein &c. The third records life in Klerksdorp under Boer occupation & later events on the veldt. Orig. red cloth, titled in black to front & sp., little stained & a little shaken, generally VG & these works scarce in any form. See illustrations on our website.   £225
