LAWRENCE (Sapper Dorothy) Sapper Dorothy Lawrence: The Only English Woman Soldier, late Royal Engineers, 51st Division, 179th Tunnelling Company, B.E.F. 1st Ed., xv+191pp., 5 portraits. John Lane/Bodley Head (On Active Service series). 1919  #60729
[HLMainPic] Masquerading in uniform the author joined (with the connivance of one Sapper Tommy Dunn) 179 Tunnelling Co. RE in the front line in 1915 until betrayed, then questioned at 3rd Army HQ, &c. During some ten days in the front line area near Loos she claims she assisted in mining operations. She later admitted that the whole stunt was designed to promote her journalistic career by providing her with a scoop story! She was prevented from selling her story to the 'papers, however, & it was first published in this book in 1919. Sad to relate, the author's literary/journalistic career failed to take off. In the 1920s she made an accusation of rape, was proclaimed insane & died in Friern Barnet mental hospital in 1964. Orig. green cloth, blindstamped & titled in black, ex-circ. lib. but VG & rare. See illustration on our website.   £225
