[HLMainPic] As one of a number of British officers seconded to the Turkish Army in 1855 the author, late of the Madras Engineers, was largely responsible for the fortifications at Kars, where the Turkish Contingent was besieged for around five months in the last major operations of the Crimean War. Upon the capitulation of Kars Lake was for about a year a prisoner of war in Russia, events of this period being recounted herein.
