Macready was commissioned in the Gordon Highlanders 1881 & served in Egypt 1882 (Battle of Tel-el-Kebir &c.) with the 1st Bn., then with the 2nd Bn. in the Boer War (Siege of Ladysmith) & on the Staff. Having received the CB, he was appointed Asst. AG at the War Office in 1907 & helped form the TF. He then commanded a Brigade before returning to Staff duties. In 1914 he was sent to France as Adjutant-General of the BEF, then in 1916 became AG to the Forces - a very senior appointment - & was an influential figure in supporting Haig's efforts on the Western Front. In 1920 he was sent to command troops in Ireland, there fighting a counter-insurgency war against the IRA during the Irish War of Independence, presiding over a crucial period in Irish & domestic politics.
