(later Colonel) Broughton's "literary power was small, & he constantly forgot them maxim which he probably leant at Eton, 'the half if more than the whole,'" but by that very fault he left a very full account & "The existing generation in India, safe under the aegis of British power, is apt to forget how hideous was the state of things which prevailed before we struck up the swords of all combatants & commanded peace.
