Apparently British & French war leaders wished to "incorporate our troops into their own weakened divisions" hence "Pershing's struggle to face the almost insurmountable difficulties to preserve the national identity of the A.E.F." by diplomatic negotiations which are related here through contemp., largely French & British, documentary sources. Much also on the organization & work of the A.E.F. in France. Orig. green cloth, VG in worn but scarce dw, with interesting letter loosely inserted from Lady Stella Reading, tour de force, founder of the WVS &c., whose husband, the Marquis of Reading, had been British Ambassador to the USA & whose opinions are included in the book. Lord & Lady Reading were champions of Anglo-American relations. She writes on 6th November 1933: "Dear Sir Maurice [Hankey?], This book was not sent to you sooner because it was out of print & we had to wait until a second hand copy could be obtained - My husband now sends it with all best wishes. Yours very sincerely, Stella Reading." A most interesting copy.
