The anonymous author explains in the Preface that he returned from the Front at the end of October 1914 & began to lecture to young officers of the New Army, resulting in the printing of this booklet that includes 'Qualities Most Useful in this War' together with notes on trenches, fire discipline, the enemy, billets, sleep (importance of), the effects of shrapnel &c. VG with bold & stylish signature to front of "C.H. Fleetwood Hesketh / Major." Note: Charles Hesketh Fleetwood Hesketh [1871-1947] was Ed. at Eton & Trinity College, Cambridge. He was Lord of the Manor of North Meols & Holcombe Rogus. Served in Boer War with the Imperial Yeomanry & with Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry in Great War, 1914-17, until invalided.
