Douglas H. Hyde-Thomson was born in 1891. He was educated at Clifton and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, receiving his commission as Midshipman in January 1907: he was appointed to the most modern ship in the Royal Navy, H.M.S. Dreadnought. This was the first of several ships in which he served before joining the Naval Wing of the Royal Flying Corps in 1913. He spent some time engaged in torpedo experiments (alongside Murray Sueter) and experimental work on seaplanes etc. continued until his death, killed whilst flying on 21st May 1918. At that time he was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Air Force, serving with the Directorate of Air Organisation. He was twenty-seven and is buried in Dover (St James's) Cemetery. This memorial, including letters written from various stations, was compiled by his brother.
