Rare memoirs. Please note Vol. I only here offered, which is the biographical volume whereas Vol. II consisted mainly of essays & letters. Includes First Afghan War when he headed the party that blew up the Kabul Gate at Ghaznee; then in 2nd Sikh War 1848-49 (Chillianwala, Gujerat &c.), Burmese War 1852 &c. He was killed in an accident in 1871 when, in an elephant howdah the beast passed under a low gateway & he was crushed to the ground. Buckland (Dictionary of Indian Biography) wrote: "No officer in India at the time had a greater reputation for experience, high principles, force of character; he held strong views & expressed them strongly." Near contemp. half red morocco, with raised bands to gilt sp. & marbled sides & endpapers by Mudies, with armorial bookplate & ownership inscrip. of Ernest N.
