The author was an officer of the Indian Cavalry (he retired as a Colonel after the Great War) but the current work relates very largely to his recent experiences in the Boer War in which he commanded the 6th New Zealand Mounted Rifles regiment & the 3rd NZ Brigade; as well as describing the lessons of the campaign he includes a statement of the mobilization, equipment & work of the NZ Cavalry contingents under his command.
