[HLMainPic] Consists of two parts: the first Book being a biog. of Sir Charles Ross, a history of his eponymous Rifle Company, the experience of the Militia & the RCMP with the Ross rifle, & its WW1 record; Book Two contains a detailed technical appraisal of the rifle. After early trials proved the rifle to be inadequate it went through various versions & improvements & the First Canadian Contingent to France in 1914-15 was equipped with the Model 10: it was an abysmal failure on active service & was replaced with Lee Enfields, first as an unofficial expedient as Canadians grabbed them from British casualties, then by Haig's command officially. Ross made a fortune but Canadian Minister of Defence Sam Hughes was discredited for his continued support of the weapon & was forced to resign. Orig. brick red cloth, VG in sl. tanned dw. Rare.
