French's most staunch & loyal supporter, his son, was still bristling over his father's reputation nearly 50 years later, finding new adversaries (John Terraine, for instance). Richard Holmes (in 'The First World War & British Military History') opines that this work "says more for it's author's loyalty than for his critical or literary ability."
