Sir Walter was appointed to write the official history of the war in the air during 1918: in order to do so he visited the Western Front, staying mainly at RAF HQ, for several months in 1918 (& even contrived to fly in a Handley Page during a bombing mission), but only completed the first volume before his death. Jones, Director of the Historical Section (Air Branch) of the Committee of Imperial Defence, completed the series. He here pays homage to Raleigh's early work & achievements, & describes the progress of his research & writing. Interesting inside view on the compilation of the official history of the War in the Air. Orig. paper covd. boards with paper label to front, VG & scarce with small ink 'Presentation Copy' stamp on tp.
