The soldier-writer's third book & his first published after 1914, being a volume of war & other poetry. Australian born & privately educated, he moved in artistic circles in London & in spite of ill-health enlisted in the KSLI in 1915, served with the 7th (S) Bn. on the Somme & was commissioned in 1917 in the Royal Irish Regiment. He resigned (or was forced to resign) in Feb. 1918 owing to alcoholism. He wrote the forceful classic Great War autobiographical work "The Middle Parts of Fortune" which was published for private circulation in 1929. An expurgated version, "Her Privates We," was published the following year & in subsequent editions & became a bestseller. Manning, however, did not live long to see the benefits, dieing in a Hampstead nursing home in 1935 aged 52. Orig. red cloth, some uneven fading but generally VG & scarce.
