[HLMainPic] Career in the ICS: Resident at Satara 1846, & following annexation of the state in 1849 was Commissioner there, then in Sind 1850-59 ("in the mutiny he nearly denuded Sind of troops to help the Panjab & South Mahratta country; repressed attempts at mutiny, & kept Sind quiet & loyal" - Buckland). Governor of Bombay from 1862-67; Member of the Council of India 1867-77; afterwards Governor of the Cape & High Commissioner in South Africa, involved with Kaffir War 1878, Zulu War 1879 & Transvaal 1880: "recalled... in 1880 for his conduct in relation to the Zulu war & alleged disregard of orders: he defended himself on his return to England: he advocated a forward policy with regard to Afghanistan..." (Buckland). Later fine three-qtr. red morocco, gilt to spines with raised bands & neatly ruled compartments, excellent copy thus with retained bookplates of Andrew Carengie.
