BELAND (Hon. Henri, MD, MP) My Three Years in a German Prison. 1st Ed., [vii]+280pp., portrait frontis., 7 photo. plates  #62891
[HLMainPic] Henri Severin Beland (1869-1935) was a Quebec-born doctor who progressed via local politics to membership of the Quebec then Canadian legislatures & held several ministerial posts. He & his wife were spending the summer of 1914 touring Europe. Soon after war broke out he offered his services to the Belgian Medical Army Corps [sic] & worked in a hospital at Antwerp as casualties began to arrive from the Front. Describes the fall of Antwerp &c., where he remained until picked up by the Germans in June 1915 & interned for three years at Stadtvogtei & Ruhleben camps. Most of the book concerns this period & most interestingly it is inscribed by the author to a well-known fellow prisoner, who also wrote accounts of his prison & escape experiences: "To my good friend and fellow prisoner Wallace Ellison. With the compliments of the author. Henry S. Beland. Beauce, Que., Canada, Dec. 1st 1920." It is evident that the recipient actually read the book, both from its signs of use & by half a dozen or so marginal notes by him. (Note: Wallace Ellison was an Englishman employed with the United Shoe Machinery Company at Frankfurt whose escape attempts resulted in many months of solitary confinement on short rations). Sp. worn, generally VG & most interesting association copy. See illustrations on our website.   £125
