H.J.I Walker) of the 1st Royal Warwicks in 1914: A detailed diary account commencing with mobilization & embarkation at Southampton on 22nd Aug. 1914; arrival at Le Cateau & a full account of the author's participation in the eponymous battle; the Retreat until 5th September, when the narrarive closes with the end of the Retreat & the Battle of the Aisne in prospect. Appended list of officers with the author's party during this period, inc. one Lt. B.L. Montgomery of Alamein fame (mentioned in the text as 'Bernard' when wounded in the arm at Le Cateau: "the only wounded officer who succeeded in getting away altogether.") Note: the author was not with the party of his bn. under Col. Elkington that surrendered at St. Quentin & his narrative has no relevance to that event.
