BARBUSSE (Henri) Under Fire: The Story of a Squad (Le Feu). 12th Imp. of USA Ed., viii+358pp. VG in dw. NY: Dutton. 1918  #59681
[HLMainPic] Classic French novel of the Western Front, based on author's experiences & written during his convalescence from a wound. Noted for its brutal realism. Falls awarded a star, & was of the opinion that 'Under Fore' was the French equivalent of 'All Quiet on the Western Front.' However: "When the compiler of this list thinks of the many kindly, intelligent, & soldierly Frenchmen, simples soldats as well as officers, & of the many fine regiments which he knew during his service as liaison officer with French troops, he is grieved that this picture of stupid brutes & fantastic monsters should be accepted as true. That M. Barbusse is an able & forceful writer of the school of Zola is not to be denied, but he has even more than his master's brutality & distortion." Orig. red cloth titled in black, from the library of the Watab Pulp & Paper Co., Sartell, Minnesota, with their label & minor stamps (cloth unmarked), in remarkably rare dw, this with minor renovation, VG thus. See illustration on our website.   £145
