[HLMainPic] The arrival of the Indian Army at Marseilles in September & October 1914 excited much interest among the French populace. Several commercial companies began to photographically record their progress & publish their photographs in large series' of postcards. These include the arrival of the first contingents at the port of Marseilles, their parades through the town to the large camps established there, & many interesting images of these camps: soldiers' encampments, cooking arrangements, music &c., followed by a sequence of troops on the move by train to Northern France, regiments of infantry & cavalry on the march, Mule Corps units & equipment (including various forms of transport & equipment such as watercarts & other wheeled transport, some being motor transport), medical staff, types of soldiers (almost universally depicted by the publishers as 'les hindoos' but various types can be identified). This collection was sourced in France by a collector who scoured his local flea markets; although individual postcards appear for sale this collection is the largest we are aware of & would provide a superlative potential resource for a publisher, researcher, or photographic archive interested in this field. All the postcards are in VG state; many have been postally used & therefore bear French stamps &c. See illustrations on our website.   £1600
