[HLMainPic] The 1942 retreat in Burma, 1st Arakan ops., 1st Chindit mission &c. Orig. cloth, VG with armorial bookplate of Bernard Edward Fergusson, plus his loosely inserted review of this book for 'The Scotsman' dated 7th Nov. 1958. His review is interestingly critical: Fergusson believed that this volume "skated over" (or even suppressed) various matters of contention. Note: Bernard Fergusson, 1911-1980, was commissioned in the Black Watch in 1931. In October 1943 he was promoted to acting brigadier & given command of the 16th Infantry Brigade, which was converted into a Chindit formation for operations in the deep jungles of Burma miles behind Japanese lines. He commanded this brigade throughout the Chindit operations of 1944 before becoming Director of Combined Operations from 1945-46. He retired from military service in 1958. He was Governor-General of New Zealand, 1962-67, & raised to the peerage as Lord Ballantrae. Interesting copy previously owned by a distinguished Chindit brigade commander.
