APPLEYARD (Maj.-Gen. F.E., CB)
A Resume of Thirty-Four Years' Army Service.
1st Ed., 130pp., portrait frontis. Printed for Private Circulation Only. nd (c.1905).
#66141
|
Rare privately printed memoirs of service from gazetting to the 80th Ft. in 1850, transfer to the Royal Fusiliers (with whom he served in the Crimea) in 1853 then 85th K.L.I. from 1861. Campaigns included Burma 1852-53, Crimea inc. all main battles. Commanded the 3rd Brigade in the 1st Division of the Peshawur Vallery Field Force under Sir Sam Browne in the 2nd Afghan War, 1878-79. Although several times mentioned in despatches in warm terms by Sam Browne ("commanded a brigade of my division at the attack on Ali Musjid... always shewn himself to be a zealous & energetic officer") he was not universally held in high esteem due to losses of transport animals &c. incurred by his command during the reconnaissance to Tarakai, & was in this connection barred from further employment in India after the Afghan War. The Viceroy accused him of "lamentable errors of judgment" & "an entire want of forethought." Most of the work, some 115pp., consists of the author's excellent, detailed letters to his wife from the Afghan campaign, which form a cohesive diary of events from day to day, with extracts from despatches &c. relating thereto. Orig. plum cloth, boards unevenly sunned & marked o/w VG with author inscrip. in ink to ffep: "Maj. Genl. E.M. Beadon with all good wishes from his old Colonel. F.E. Appleyard. Tarakai, Surbiton. 29.9.04" together with forwarding letter from the author. (Interesting that Appleyard should name his house after the scene of his controversial "errors of judgement" from which he no doubt felt vindicated, & the house still stands: 8, The Crescent, Surbiton!). See illustrations on our website.

The Hyderabad Contingent evolved, in 1853, from the British organised & officered Nizam's forces raised by Wellesley in the 1800s. Its infantry & cavalry regiments, & gunners, saw extensive action in the Indian Mutiny & other campaigns: "...a clear explanation of the Regt's complex roots, its services to the HEIC & later the Crown, & in particular its role during the Mutiny (pages 143-245). There is liberal mention of awards & casualties. Units of the Contingent served in Burma (1886-87) & in Central Africa... (1891-92). The last three chapters are summaries of each of the Regts of the Contingent, with details of their uniforms & equipment. An admirable compilation." - Perkins 407. Orig. green cloth, gilt, little rubbed o/w VG & very rare (800 copies printed). See illustration on our website.
