Search tips

You may search our site by author, title or keyword(s), or indeed any combination of these. You can search the entire site or just one category at a time. There is great flexibility and you should be able to find any material in your target area without difficulty. It is worth devoting some little time to your search methods.

Examples:
To search for a specific book you can enter an author surname and just a word or two of the title, to pinpoint your target. For example, for Everard’s Wyrall’s  The History of the King’s Regiment (
Liverpool) you could type Wyrall in the author box and Liverpool in the title box.

To search for books by a particular author simply type the surname in the author box and leave all others blank.

To search for all books on a specific regiment try (a) typing the name of the regiment in the title box and, separately, (b) typing the name of the regiment in the keywords box. By doing the latter you will identify personal memoirs etc. that concern a particular regiment, but which do not have the name of the regiment in the title.

The same principles apply to searches for particular campaigns, battles, military events and personalities. It is worth experimenting and you can quickly narrow down our listings to see just what you are looking for. Examples:

Western Front and Poetry will select all books by or about poets or containing their poetry, including anthologies.

Western Front and Poetry and Sassoon will select all books by or about Siegfried Sassoon or containing his poetry, including anthologies.

The search fields are not case sensitive, so Wyrall may be typed Wyrall, wyrall or WYRALL with the same result.
